Why country matters more than you expect
Cities in the same country tend to share a building era, a planning tradition and a climate, and all three show up from the air. American cities read as grids with a clustered downtown because most were laid out in one go on flat land. Japanese cities read as dense low sprawl with few tall clusters. Gulf cities read as a thin line of towers against desert and water. Once you can place the country, the city itself is usually a short list.
