Confucius & the Good Life

Ren, roles, and the Golden Rule

Confucius and the Good Life

For Confucius, a flourishing society grows from cultivated character. At its heart is ren, humaneness, a warmth toward others expressed through our roles as parent, child, ruler, friend. Each role carries duties, and treating others well means beginning with restraint. He gave the Golden Rule its earliest clear form, centuries before the West did.

Do not impose on others what you do not wish for yourself.

Where this sits in the course

Confucius & the Good Life” is lesson 3 of 5 in Eastern Currents, a course about a parallel ancient path: suffering, flow, roles, and liberation.. The lessons are sequenced rather than a menu, so this one assumes what came before it.

Eastern Currents is itself one of 18 courses in thinkr. The set opens with what philosophy is, moves through the Stoics and the Eastern traditions, then into what can be known, what exists, how to act and how power works — closing on practical reasoning you can use in an argument this week.

It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.
Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance.
Wherever you go, go with all your heart.

In the app this lesson is followed by 3 exercises that check whether the idea actually landed — and every answer, right or wrong, is explained rather than scored. That is the part a written page cannot reproduce.
