Liberty and Its Limits

Berlin, Arendt, and freedom's two faces

Two Concepts of Liberty

Isaiah Berlin distinguished 'negative liberty'-freedom from interference by others, from 'positive liberty'-freedom to be one's own master and realize one's potential. He warned that positive liberty, if twisted, could justify coercion in the name of a person's 'true' self. Hannah Arendt, reflecting on totalitarianism, coined the 'banality of evil' to describe how ordinary people commit atrocities through thoughtlessness rather than monstrous intent.

Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four.
George Orwell
