Trace the Claim

A claim can travel through many people without gaining any new evidence. Ten posts repeating one anonymous story are still one source. Before accepting a striking claim, separate what was observed from what someone inferred. Find the original report, check its date and context, and ask whether the method supports the conclusion. Expertise matters when it is relevant to the question. Neither a prestigious title nor a suspicious motive settles whether a claim is true.
